How to crochet chain stitch (ch)

The chain stitch (ch) is the first stitch beginners need to learn when starting their crochet journey. It’s the foundation for almost every crochet project and looks similar to a braid. This stitch involves carefully manipulating a single piece of yarn.

Instructions:

  1. Make a Slip Knot:
    • Create a slip knot and place it on your crochet hook. Tighten it, but not too tight – the loop should move easily on the hook.
  2. Hold the Yarn:
    • Hold the yarn with your non-dominant hand. You can loop it around your fingers for better control.
  3. Yarn Over (yo):
    • Wrap the yarn over your hook from back to front.
  4. Pull Through:
    • Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook. You have now made your first chain stitch.
  5. Repeat:
    • Repeat the yarn over and pull through steps to create more chain stitches. Each chain should look like a braid.

Tips:

  • Keep your tension even – not too tight and not too loose.
  • Count your chains as you go to keep track of your progress.

This chain stitch is the foundation of many crochet projects. Watch the tutorial video to see how it’s done in action. Happy crocheting!
